Sugar in the Isles

On Monday the 22 February 2010, at the Old Dispensary on St Mary’s St in Ely was the first meeting of the Sugar in the Isles East Anglian Sugarcraft Association. This came about through some dedicated sugarcraft volunteers who since the Ely Sugarcraft closed some 12 years ago have been fragmented in other guilds out of the city.

A growing interest identified by some prominent cake makers and decorators within the city, through their growing customer base felt that there is a need for something of this nature within the city.

Cutlacks of Ely has enhanced its chances of success by investing in a wide range of tools, that can be bought locally to assist in carrying out the craft, along with the endorsement of prominent cake makers within the city who are involved on the committee. These tools and products can now also be purchaced in their cambridge store.

Beyond demonstrating there will be an opportunity for interested parties to take basic and advanced courses in the art of sugarcraft. Just ask for details while there.

As the months go on and with the support of local people it is hoped that we will be bringing national and international cake demonstrators to create even more interest in the art of sugarcraft

Why not pop along to the Old Dispensary on St Marys Street in Ely the 4th Monday of every month.

Starts 7.30pm and costs £5.00 for non members £1.50 for members, for details of how to become a member ask on the door. Entrance fee to include tea/coffee and buns, also there will be a raffle.

After the demonstration there will be a great opportunity to talk to local sugarcrafters and the demostator about any thing you have seen or heard.

Teaching & Demonstrations

Have you ever looked at a wedding cake or seen sugar flowers and said to yourself I wish I could do that?

Well now you can at Yellow Butterfly Cake Designs.

Even Ryan Taylor from the local Star radio could not resist the opportunity to get involved when he featured Yvonne, our cake designer demonstrating her work on his work place challenge. Did he pass? well you will have to ask him that for yourselves.

Yvonne has been teaching for 5 years and is constantly updating her own training and development so her courses reflect this so that her pupils are always able to see and understand the very latest in developments within sugarcraft teaching.

Along with that she has many traditional skills in royal icing, various piping techniques, brush embroidery, modelling, and modern cake covering mediums, which she can and does run courses and demonstrates in.

Yvonne has now be asked to teach at Cottenham village college as part of thier adult Summer school teaching the art of sugarcraft

Further more our pupil’s can choose from single day courses, to  six week 3 hour sessions either in the daytime or evenings. We would always try to ensure that our classes are in groups of 3 so that we have time to give attention to all pupils.

We offer all our pupils the option to buy the basic tools they require to complete all our courses, or if they want, many of the tools can be bought locally at Cutlacks in Ely or Cambridge in their latest sugarcraft department.

Yvonne is available for your demonstrations why not ring her and find out how you can book her for your special event.

She is a regular demonstrator at Cutlacks in Ely and Cambridge demonstrating their great range of tools.

Once a month you will find her at the Old Dispensary in Ely on St. Marys St with a group of friends passing on skills to fellow sugarcrafters.

Women's institute, and many other clubs and societies are requesting Yvonne's services as she is building up a reputation as a formidable following within not only locally but nationally.
